Professional certification is a formal recognition by a certifying body that an individual has demonstrated a defined level of competency within a specified body of knowledge. Generally, certification programs are administered by a professional society that represents a particular technical discipline. Therefore, it is a recognition by one's peers; not a professional registration or licensure.
Certification in any technical field is an indication that the individual has been formally recognized as having an understanding of a specified body of knowledge. It also demonstrates that they have prepared themselves professionally to meet certain certification criteria through work experience and the ability to pass a prescribed written examination. The specific requirements for certification as a Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance Professional through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers are defined in the ASME 14.5.2-2000 Standard and repeated in this study guide.
