Any energy conversion has an inevitable effect on the environment. When fossil fuels are burned in power plants, discharge of pollutants becomes an issue. Whereas in the 1920s a heavily smoking power plant stack was an indication of prosperity, today the discharge of any combustion products, particularly from coal-fired power plants, must be minimized. for this task, emission-reduction measures and systems have been developed and introduced:
