Rub and looseness are two different phenomena that, because of their similar rotor dynamic behavior, produce remarkably similar symptoms. Both malfunctions are capable of producing changes in 1X vibration, as well as generating super- and subsynchronous vibration. The two phenomena are, in some respects, mirror images of each other. For that reason, we will discuss both types of malfunctions in this chapter.
