We have seen that vibration can be measured with two parameters, frequency and amplitude. These are good and useful measurements. However, vibration never occurs in isolation; there is usually a root, or fundamental, cause of vibration in a machine. The machinery specialist needs to identify the root cause of any vibration problem, and it is often difficult to do this on the basis of frequency and amplitude alone. More information is needed.
