When high-energy radiation is used to produce a change in matter—whether a physical change, as in the testing of materials for use in reactors, a chemical change, as in the polymerization of plastics, or a biological change, as in the treatment of cancer —the radiation must be measured and controlled (1). The measurement of radiation in situations such as these constitute the subject of radiation dosimetry.
