ASTM Research and Motor Method Ratings The determinations of antiknock ratings by the ASTM Research (designated ASTM D 908 - 56) and Motor Methods (designated ASTM D 357 - 56) were standard except for determinations made by the Micromethod techniques, which are so noted in the tables. However, the data were accumulated over a period of years while the “standard” methods were changing. The one major revision was the substitution in 1953 of the detonation meter for the bouncing pin pick-up.
