ASTM Research and Motor Method Ratings The determinations of antiknock ratings by the ASTM Research (designated ASTM D 908 - 56) and Motor Methods (designated ASTM D 357 - 56) were standard except for determinations made by the Micromethod techniques, which are so noted in the tables. However, the data were accumulated over a period of years while the “standard” methods were changing. The one major revision was the substitution in 1953 of the detonation meter for the bouncing pin pick-up. For a description of the standard ASTM methods, the reader is referred to ASTM Manual for Rating Motor Fuels by Motor and Research Methods- 1956 and its supplement. The microtechnique of knock rating is fully described in ASTM Proceedings, Vol. 51, pp. 329–337 (1951), “Proposed Method of Test for Motor and Research Octane Numbers of Small Samples.” Briefly listed below are some of the more important variables controlled in the Research and Motor methods of test.
