The purpose of this Symposium on “Soil Dynamics” is twofold: first, to assemble available information and, second, to discuss as yet unsolved problems in soil dynamics. Soil considered as an engineering material, in particular with respect to soil dynamics, represents a new development in the field of engineering, thus producing numerous open questions which seemed to justify this Symposium. It is gratifying indeed that in the postwar years several theoretical and experimental investigations have been made in an attempt to find solutions for the complex problems involved in the dynamic behavior of soils.
