A survey of past work on the effect of lubricants in minimizing fretting corrosion is presented, and it is shown that investigators differ on the corrective effect of specific lubricants. With the use of a modified version of the Fafnir Thrust-Bearing Friction Oxidation Tester, fretting corrosion data were obtained using various greases. These data are presented and discussed in relation to the factors which are of importance in minimizing fretting. It is concluded that the feedability (consistency) of a grease under the action of bearing shear is of prime importance in minimizing fretting. The use of specific soap bases, solid materials such as ZnO or MoS2, and additives such as tricresyl phosphate do not, per se, alleviate fretting.
