This chapter focuses on uses of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for the characterization of petroleum. In particular, high-field Fourier-transform NMR analyses of liquid petroleum samples will be discussed. An overview of method considerations is given. The currently defined industry test methods are discussed. Then, a broader discussion is given of suggestions for sample preparation and for data collection, processing, and presentation. Selected references are chosen from the literature to highlight methods developed for assignment and quantification of carbon types, monitoring process chemistry, and quantification of olefins (alkenes). The chapter ends with examples of specialized applications for which NMR data were used to predict saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes contents of crudes; quantify heteroatom species in heavy fractions of petroleum by chemical labeling; and monitor asphaltenes aggregation behavior with concentration in toluene solutions.
