This chapter describes the chemistry and technology of detergents and the mechanisms by which these surfactant-containing products clean surfaces. Detergents differ from surfactants in that they contain a variety of other compounds that enhance their cleaning action. Such compounds include builders, stabilizers and hydrotropes (primarily in liquid detergents), oxygen-releasing compounds, antiredeposition agents, optical brighteners, enzymes, and many others. Detergents are of many types (e.g., heavy-duty laundry detergents, light-duty dishwashing liquids, hard-surface cleaners, and automatic dishwasher detergents), with laundry detergents using the largest volume of surfactants.
