The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reference method for ambient air monitoring of hydrocarbons is gas chromatography. This paper briefly reviews the chromatographic technique and discusses the various parameters which are critical to the satisfactory performance of air quality chromatographs. Detailed information is provided on installation factors, hydrogen and air support gases, and calibration. Training requirements and various methods of maintenance support are also reviewed.
