The operation of a sulfur flame photometric detector (FPD) is based on the chemiluminescence of an activated molecular sulfur species produced by a hydrogen hyper-ventilated diffusion flame. A predictable detector response is obtained from a gas molecule in proportion to the number of sulfur atoms it contains. An FPD sulfur analyzer is comprised of an FPD and photomultiplier tube assembly, a pneumatic sampling and flow control network, and a signal conditioning and electronic subsystem. The analyzer output can assume three basic forms which provide sensitivity for parts per billion level analysis, broad dynamic range, or convenient readability. FPD analyzers are used extensively for laboratory analysis and ambient and area monitoring. By a continuous sample conditioning procedure, the analyzer can be used for source monitoring and on-stream process analysis.
