In addition to the various standard samples, reference samples having less accurately known compositions are available for semiquantitative applications. These are particularly useful for the identification of types of alloys in the absence of accurate standards, or for estimation of element concentrations in a wide variety of materials. Some 185 reference samples are listed in this report and include: 1. Semiquantitative samples containing about 50 elements in matrices of graphite, zinc oxide, lithium carbonate, and a combination of zinc, magnesium, and calcium oxides, 2. Several sets of rod samples for calibration of visual spectroscopes, 3. Nominal composition materials of aluminum, stainless steel, and nickel, and 4. A variety of metals in powder form. A more detailed description of the reference samples follows.
