Imaging technology for particle count and shape analysis continues to develop and gain wide acceptance for use across many industries, including lubricating oils. The performance life of engines and heavy machinery can be optimized with proper care of the oils that lubricate their dynamic components that slide and rub against each other. This paper discusses the currently available ASTM standards that directly apply to the lubricating industry as well as those that provide information in support of the technology. This paper also includes ongoing standard work to move the industry forward.
