Paper making is one of the largest industries in the United States. The application of lime in the paper manufacturing process can be traced back almost 2000 years. Constant improvements over time have made it possible for lime today to have applications in pulping, papermaking, and paper mills' energy and environmental sectors, leading to a demand for well over 2 × 106 tons of lime products annually. Currently, the most promis ing sector for lime applications in papermaking is the filler sector. Today, paper products require the use of approximately 3.5 × 106 tons of filler material annually, with an estimated 5 % annual increase. Fillers are less expensive than fiber, allowing for reduced production costs while improving optical paper properties, dimensional stability, sheet formation, and printability. Fillers will also allow the paper industry to reduce its energy use and reduce the use of acidic materials in the bleaching process.
