This study examined the sediment quality of the eastern Seto Inland Sea in terms of the fluctuation of the population of sand lance, based on the investigation results. The result showed that the sulfide content of sandy sediments deviates widely with ignition loss, and that “the modified sulfide content” defined by excluding the sand content became very high. It is concluded that the population of sand lance is influenced by the low quality of sediments in summer season. The level of the modified sulfide content is sufficient to damage the aestivating sand lance.
