Standards Design Group, Inc., (SDG) produces software to aid engineering and design professionals in the building industry with lengthy and often tedious design procedures. The paper describes recent rapid improvement in computing technology and the corresponding increase in complexity of engineering design standards. It provides justification for development of software that incorporates long computation procedures with logical decisions to achieve designs with just a few simple input operations on the part of the designer and engineer. The paper goes on to discuss specifically modifications that SDG incorporated into its window glass design software in conjunction with the forthcoming revision of E 1300. It presents design examples to illustrate some of the differences that will result with this revision.
