As steel cleanliness has been improved it has become ever more difficult to properly assess micro-inclusion contents and size distribution of harmful non-metallic inclusions in steel. The fact that inclusions do initiate fatigue failure is well known and easily proven in fatigue testing experiments. The problem addressed is to predict the occurrence of non-metallic inclusion of the size required to initiate fatigue failure in rotating beam samples based on modern high-resolution non-metallic inclusion assessments. The results of such non-metallic inclusion ratings are compared to the results obtained in fatigue tests of three modern, low total oxygen contents heats. These heats have been fatigue tested, and all fatigue initiations have been located to non-metallic inclusions which have been analyzed as regards to size, distance from specimen surface and inclusion chemical composition.
