Fouling can cause significant problems in heat transfer equipment but is in many cases intractable theoretically and experimentally. As an aid in studying the effects of fouling and ultimately in preventing it, results of stepwise checkrating simulation calculations for case studies of a typical shell and tube heat exchanger are presented. These give information on subsections of the equipment, as well as details of its overall capabilities. In order to carry out these calculations accurate physical property data at the temperature, pressure and composition conditions actually existing at desired geometric points in the heat exchanger are required. These data can be provided in part by an internationally developed extensive collection of physical property data.
