This paper presents a case history on the use of end-bearing, underreamed drilled shaft foundations installed using slurry methods to support a 21-story building in Boston, Massachusetts. Factors leading to the selection of drilled shaft foundations for the project, design criteria, results of a pre-construction testing program as well as production foundation installation and quality control procedures are presented. Data on performance of the foundation system through the completion of construction and comments regarding the general applicability of underreamed drilled shafts installed using slurry methods are also presented.
