The abrasive wear process is often thought to be a form of simple microcutting and to be quite easy to model. Yet, only very qualitative rules of thumb exist for purposes of design life calculations, materials selection and materials development. A simple model based on hardness has had some success when used for general comparisons of similar materials worn under similar conditions. However, it has a number of limitations which must be clearly understood in order to use it in a global sense. The potential for developing a concise model of more universal applicability and the need for such a model are explored.
