The application of a new sulfur-selective detector for the analysis of sulfur-containing pesticides using gas chromatography is described. The Sulfur Chemiluminescence Detector (SCD™) [Sievers Research, Inc.] offers significant advantages over existing sulfur-selective detectors including high sensitivity (< 5 pg S sec-1), a linear response over five orders of magnitude, high selectivity for sulfur compounds, an approximately equimolar response for sulfur compounds and no quenching of the sulfur signal due to co-elution of non-sulfur-containing species. This unique combination should provide a valuable new tool for the analysis of sulfur-containing pesticides and their degradation products in a wide range of samples including water, soils and food products.
