Measurement of the mechanical and physical properties of metallic and inorganic coatings presents difficulties. The difficulties arise because coatings are often thin, and they are by definition attached to substrates. The expediency of separating the coating from its substrate to measure certain characteristics may be resorted to. Although this technique may provide useful information, a doubt may linger as to whether the coatings on a particular batch of production parts have identical properties as those measured on separately prepared specimens. The coating may present handling problems even when it is detached if it is brittle and extemely thin. The properties may be dependent on thickness; studying the properties of thick coatings to deduce the properties of thinner ones may not be worthwhile.
