The Particle Measuring Systems two-dimensional PMS 2-D system has been successfully used in a wide variety of applications: for fundamental research, for quality control, and for field work. A number of features of the system make it particularly suitable as a versatile, robust tool for studying spray clouds of toxic materials; yet it can also be used as a highly refined tool for fundamental studies on single droplets. The ability to simultaneously measure droplet size and velocity is a particular advantage of the system.

As with any measuring technique it is necessary to accept the limitations of the system, the necessary precautions in its use, and to correctly interpret the data. Work on calibration of the system has led to a custom-designed graticule being made and to the possibility of a standard to be used on each instrument. This would create a new level of uniformity between the various user groups. Initial cross-calibration work with the Malvern system has also shown the possibility that meaningful comparisons between the different techniques may be made.
