The paper describes the physical, thermal, and fire-protective characteristics of fabrics prepared from Celanese polybenzimidazole (PBI) fiber blended with other fibers (for example, flame-retardant rayon, aramids). Fabric engineering design criteria, production techniques, testing, and correlations with applications requirements are presented. Computer statistical analyses were used to define optimum performance regimens and are discussed in relation to laboratory data and end-use performance evaluations. Data from various standard tests are interpreted in light of PBI fiber performance contribution.
