A system of two coupled nonlinear differential equations of the second and fourth order, respectively, governing motions of an accelerating membrane-like disk, made of a rectilinearly orthotropic material, is derived. A harmonic-type nonlinear transverse vibration and wave representing the gravest mode in the linear case is then studied. The membrane is assumed to be free, and its deflection is represented by a simple monomial. Free nonlinear vibrations represent the familiar decrease of period of vibrations with an increase of amplitude and show a dependence on the degree of anisotropy. By imposing temporal perturbations on the deflections, the equations for stability of the vibration and the forward and backward traveling waves are derived and discussed.
