Delamination is an important step in the fracture of laminates. In order to characterize this phenomenon, tension opening (Mode I) tests have been carried out. Monitoring by acoustic emission allows the determination of an initiation fracture energy that is characteristic of the material bonding. Analysis by fracture mechanics of the delamination propagation shows that the resistance curves description is a very useful presentation of the delamination behavior. Results of experiments on glass-polyester, carbon-epoxy, and kevlar-epoxy are presented. The influence of moisture content on the R-curves of carbon-epoxy laminates is included.
