A new analytical solution for the resistance of a horizontal slice through a pile to lateral loading is presented. The solution assumes that a pile is surrounded by an infinite elastic medium, but it allows for the tendency of this medium to separate from the back of the pile. Procedures for determining Young's modulus for various soils are given and comparisons of the overall results are made with previously published results.
