Thin coatings (fire retardant) are used to reduce combustibility or surface flame spread of wood or cellulosic building materials. Thick coatings are used to provide fire resistive protection of steel. The characteristics of intumescent and nonintumescent coatings, and thick insulative and energy absorbing (ablative) materials are discussed. Methods of testing are reviewed.
