In this paper polymer wear is examined by a consideration of key phenomena occurring at the interface such as the formation of transfer films, metal pick-up, and surface melting. The significance of these aspects is discussed. Also, the concept of abrasive wear is described in terms of the damage done to plastic surfaces. The use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in elucidating the nature of polymer wear is well demonstrated.
