A brief review and evaluation of the provisions of existing codes and standards regarding steel piles is presented. The reasoning behind the current proposal for an allowable bearing load of 50 percent of the steel yield strength is presented.

The use of existing codes and standards to provide adequate guidance for preventing foundation failures is questioned. Codes based on load factor concepts and improved field inspection are thought to be necessary.
