This paper describes investigations, carried out in Greece, on dispersion properties of clays in connection with (a) the performance of the upper layers of an earth dam prior to the complete filling of its reservoir, and (b) the selection of clay materials to be used for the construction of earth dams. Data concerning typical high sodium content soils in Greece and chemical data concerning river and lake waters are presented. Methods adapted by the author for dispersion testing are described. The effect of the chemical analysis of the eroding fluid is discussed.
