This report discusses the impact properties of interply hybrids of Kevlar 49 aramid fibers and Thornel 300 graphite fibers in Narmco 5208 epoxy resin. The instrumented Charpy was used to characterize 20-ply unidirectional composites with nine fiber ratios and three stacking sequences. It was observed that the maximum total energy per cross sectional area occurred in a symmetrically interleaved ten-ply Thornel/ten-ply Kevlar composite. However, the maximum crack initiation energy per area occurred in a three-ply Kevlar/fourteen-ply Thornel/three-ply Kevlar composite. There was no single hybrid system that was best in all categories discussed.
