For some years, the need for improved waterproofing materials and systems for flat-roof weatherproofing has been appreciated worldwide. Modern building requirements place very exacting demands on weatherproof coverings, and these demands are frequently beyond the limitations of the traditional materials used in the various countries. Two main areas of demand are in the plaza deck waterproofing and road bridge deck waterproofing. Both are areas of very heavy construction work where damage to the waterproofing membrane during building construction work is a major problem.

A new type of waterproofing material, which is virtually an asphalt-modified rubber sheet, has been developed, together with a range of different weatherproofing systems (both protected and unprotected systems) to meet the demands of plaza decks, bridge decks, and roof decks where high insulation and light-weight construction are major factors. The major factors concerned with the development of this asphalt-modified polymer sheeting are covered.
