Crack arrestment criteria for composite panels containing buffer (or crack-arrestment) strips are derived for the cases of cracks within the primary and buffer-strip material. The criteria, which can be used to size the buffer strips to arrest cracks of given length, are in good agreement with the available experimental data on crack arrest in composite panels.
