There are many forces in the scientific community which are gradually encouraging changes in laboratory automation. These forces and some of the anticipated changes are discussed briefly. The main topic is the new evolving methodology that will be required to effectively implement the computer systems of the future. ASTM Committee E-31's contributions to the development of this methodology is discussed as a prelude to the other papers in the book.
