Investigation into many branches of chemistry and physics reUes extensively on the analysis of absorption spectra in the ultraviolet region (200 to 400 μm). The analysis of the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum depends explicitly on the needs of the investigator. To understand the theoretical approach to analyzing a UV spectrum one needs background in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. However, the purpose of this section is to consider only the practical approach to UV spectrophotometry. The reader is referred to several of the numerous theoretical treatises on this subject [1–4].
