The technique of composite formation by continuous filament winding and concurrent electrodeposition of the metal matrix is described. The reactivity of boron with nickel is documented by series of photomicrographs of reaction specimens exposed to temperatures of 600 to 900 C for times from 1 to 100 hr. Optically observable reaction at 600 C was found to result in significant degradation in composite mechanical properties. Coated monofilament tests confirmed the composite degradation data. The possibility of obtaining rule of mixtures composite behavior in mechanically gripped specimens by direct application of load to the filament by compression of the matrix in the grip area is discussed.
