The paper describes how the achievement of product reliability depends upon an understanding and the determination of the extent of the scatter in fatigue life. By working in the short-life region of the S-N diagram it is possible to develop a pragmatic approach which has demonstrably been of great value in the case of gas turbine engines. The dangerous fallacy of depending upon the static proof test is emphasized.
