In standard fire tests of floor and roof constructions for buildings, restraint of thermal expansion is commonly simulated in the laboratory by enclosing the specimen within a rigid restraining frame. Restraining capability and restraint intensity applied to similar test specimens varies among different laboratories. Factors affecting restraint of thermal expansion of floor and roof constructions in building fires are discussed. The conditions contributing to maximum restraint are presented, and a rational approach is given for its uniform simulation in laboratory fire tests. Other conditions of restraint of thermal expansion are discussed.
