In a previous paper the authors discussed the buckling of a cylindrical tank of variable thickness under external pressure, and they developed a method by which the factor of safety against buckling was derived in numerical terms.

This present paper deals with the strengthening of a tank whose factor of safety is insufficient. Obviously, great help may be expected from one or two stiffening circular rings, adjusted in the upper part of the tank, where the thickness of the shell is small. The authors show how to calculate such rings.
