This investigation is concerned with a laterally-loaded bar which is partially embedded in a three-dimensional elastic half space. The loading is assumed to be applied at the unembedded end of the bar and may, in general, be a combination of horizontal shear forces and moments. On the adoption of a one-dimensional theory for the bar and the classical theory of elasticity for the semi-infinite solid, the structure-medium interaction problem is reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind whose solution is then computed. Selected results are presented to illustrate various features of the solution. A set of compliance charts is also included.
