Abstract

This paper describes the results of an investigation of the effect of inaccuracies in the two quarter-wave plates of a photoelastic polariscope on the configuration of the monochromatic fringe pattern. It is shown that the fringe pattern is distorted to an extent which depends upon the orientations of the axes of principal stress and the difference between the retardations of the two plates.
