Abstract
The propagation of stresses in bars under time-dependent self-equilibrating end loads is discussed by means of a simple model. It is found that high stresses are restricted to a short region near the end of the bar if the loads are applied comparatively slowly, but extend to longer portions if the loads are rapidly applied.
