Abstract

The author presents solutions of the problem of thermal stresses in thin plates of uniform thickness with simply supported edges when the temperature varies only along the thickness of the plate. For the case of polygonal-shaped plates it is shown that the solution can be deduced from the problem of the torsion of prismatical bars, the cross section of which has the same shape as the plate. The exact solutions for cases of equilateral triangular and square plates are given. Although only the case of small deflections is considered, its limitations are treated in detail.
