Abstract

This paper treats the problem of the transverse vibration of a three-hinged system of elastic bars with a small ratio of rise to span. Owing to a nonlinear relation between the acting forces and the deflection, two strictly distinct types of vibration, with an intermediate limiting case of vanishing frequency, can be stated. The problem of elastic stability of the system in the case of a load applied suddenly is also discussed. The system treated is the simplest one in a class of systems, whose elastic stability under statical loads has been investigated in some detail, but whose dynamical properties are still known only very incompletely.
