Nanostructured films offer potential for considerable improvements in mechanical properties by comparison with traditional single composition coatings. This nanostructuring can be carried out in many ways, but one of the easiest methods to implement it is through nanolayering with two or more phases. Alteration of the thickness of the different phases then permits the tailoring of the properties of the coating.
