A finite element model of the path of 1/2 inch magnetic tape media as found in a Small Format Tape Evaluation System (SFTES) was created and validated. The model was used to predict tape geometry within the system, specifically in the neighborhood of an inclined-wall vacuum column and an inclined capstan. Parametric study via simulation and testing was used to improve the quality of tape handling within the SFTES.
