Living tissues and engineered tissue constructs undergo synthesis and degradation processes that alter their solid and solute content. To model such events, it is necessary to account for solid matrix deformation as well as mass exchanges with the solid. Equations of chemical kinetics, which can describe mass exchanges among constituents of a mixture, are generally formulated for fluid solutions only. Therefore the objective of this study is to implement a formulation of matrix synthesis and binding kinetics in the FEBio finite element framework (, using the biphasic-solute material consisting of a mixture of a solid, solvent and neutral solute [1].
