Both hemodynamic and structural performance are important considerations in designing replacement heart valves. In this study, silicone diaphragms of prescribed orifice and material properties are used as simplified heart valve analogues. Diaphragm deformation is quantified simultaneously with flow characteristics including pressure drop, mean flow rate and instantaneous velocity fields. The combined flow and structural data can be used to validate fluid-structure interaction codes suitable for biomedical applications, including studies of flow through heart valves.
